Kenya can be more than a Big Five trip. Pair the Maasai Mara with Lamu, Watamu or Diani — or an island beyond.
Kenya can be more than a Big Five trip — it can be a journey combining wildlife, landscapes, culture, conservation and the Indian Ocean. After days of early game drives, the coast is the perfect place to slow down.
Start with the wildlife
Begin in the Maasai Mara, where open grasslands offer some of Kenya's most celebrated wildlife viewing and the chance to see the Big Five. During the migration period, huge herds of wildebeest and zebra can move through the Mara ecosystem.

Then head for the coast
- Lamu — Swahili history, dhow culture, beaches and sand-dune landscapes.
- Watamu and Malindi — marine experiences and beaches.
- Diani — beaches and coastal relaxation.
Or go further
Zanzibar adds Stone Town's history, dhow sailing, spice farms and the beaches of Nungwi, Kendwa and the east coast. Mauritius works well as a relaxing island extension after an African safari.
Good to know
The dry season (January – March) is a useful period for safari + coast combinations, and the shoulder season (November – December) works well too.
